Manual Wheelchairs at SUPERIOR Home Health Care

A manual wheelchair is a chair with wheels, used when walking is difficult or impossible due to illness, injury, problems related to old age, or disability.

Wheelchairs come in a wide variety of sizes and styles to meet the specific needs of their users. Technology has kept pace – they can be very lightweight thus achieving more efficient self-propulsion. At SUPERIOR Home Health Care, we custom-order them so they fit you ideally and we are able to optimize functionality.

They may include specialized seating adaptions, individualized controls, or may be activity specific, as seen with sports wheelchairs and beach wheelchairs.

The most widely recognized distinction is between motorized wheelchairs which are battery propelled, as Manual Wheelchairs are propelled by the wheelchair user, or by the attending caregiver who pushes from behind.

Why Choose a Manual Wheelchair?

If you have enough muscle function to propel a manual wheelchair, it is probably the best form of mobility! Manual wheelchairs can be folded, making it much easier to transport, they tend to need fewer repairs, and provide a valid form of exercise!

Manual wheelchairs are available in a wide range of styles and can be customized to optimize functionality. Depending on the type of manual wheelchair, they can be self-propelled or propelled with assistance. For short-term needs, we are happy to provide a variety of rental options.

In the Province of Ontario, we often work with a client’s Occupational Therapist (OTs) to decide on the clinically optimal wheelchair and the seating and positioning components that accompany the wheelchair. OTs are referred to as prescribers often as they lead the client’s medical assessment and make recommendations and assist with funding applications (when required).

SUPERIOR Home Health Care locations in Barrie and Thunder Bay are Registered Vendors with  Assistive Devices Program (ADP). The ADP is a program operated by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care that provides support and funding to Ontario residents who have long-term physical disabilities. The ADP may contribute to covering the costs of mobility devices such as manual and power wheelchairs, seating and positioning, rollators and scooters.

For more information on ADP, please refer to the ADP website – http://www.health.gov.on.ca/en/public/programs/adp

WHY THE STP TILT WHEELCHAIR?

IN-HOUSE DEVELOPMENT

One of our biggest strengths. We know what we create and you just have to say what you need. All STPs are built within Power Plus and hence we guarantee their quality.

LOW SEAT TO FLOOR HEIGHT WHEEL CONFIGURATION

We can go down to 12 and a quarter and the client would still have the option of reaching back on the wheels and propelling the chair.

TRIGGER MECHANISM FOR THE TILT

For the tilting process, STP uses a trigger mechanism. As a standard, we mount the trigger on the stroller handle, but if you feel comfortable to have it somewhere else, it is your call.

CUSTOMIZED STPS

Just like all our products, you could customize several features in STPs as well. Ex: Aluminum or Steel for the braking system. The color of our STP

WEIGHT CAPACITY CAPABLE OF HANDLING

Even though the standard weight capacity is 250 pounds, we could go up to 400 pounds as per your demands. . All we have to do is put in greater cylinders and adjust the configuration.

TIGHT FOOTPRINT

We did this to make it easy for the chair to turn within a small turning radius. Take the rear axle forward, mount the journals inside the frame to get a very tight turning radius.

If the user is tall and you need to stabilize the chair, move the rear axle back and adjust the height. Then take the front journals and keep them at a leading position. This will ensure a greater turning radius with stability intact.
