Seating & Positioning Products at SUPERIOR Home Health Care
We know consumers pay specific attention to Wheelchairs. Conversely, they are less aware of the importance of Seat Cushions and Back Supports and the impact these items have on the health of a regular wheelchair client. As Healthcare Professionals, we work with Occupational Therapists (OTs) and these products are almost always prescribed for use in manual and power wheelchairs.
They are the foundation for comfort, postural support and alignment while also reducing the risk of skin breakdown.
Seat Cushions
There are a multitude of materials that can be used in the manufacturing of wheelchair seat cushions. Within the cushion itself, materials will generally include foam, elastomers, gel, fluid, and air. The shape of cushions will differ because we’re trying to provide a custom solution for the wheelchair user. These different shapes are intended to solve postural challenges.
The cushion cover is covered by science too – different covers would be used to address allergies, incontinence, skin protection and foot-propelling as an example. And very commonly in manual wheelchairs, a solid seat insert would be added underneath the cushion and within the cushion cover – creating a firm base to prevent hammocking in the cushion and reducing stress on the manual wheelchair.
Back Supports
Please note many of the comments above for Seat Cushions also relate to Back Supports.
Back Supports can range from simple upholstery sling backs to highly contoured and/or modular custom systems. Back Supports are designed to stabilize the pelvis, torso and spine. Contoured back shells, soft foam, and adjustable components provide stability and comfort – thus reducing fatigue, optimizing function and making a person’s time in a wheelchair enjoyable!
As Seating and Positioning is so specific to each person, is usually prescribed by an Occupational Therapist and is also guided by Funding Guidelines, we are presenting this section at the Manufacturer/Supplier level rather than the Product/Model level.
